The best advice you’ll get is form your vet to be honest, they can check her out, there may be an underlying reason why she is fat.

you are the one who feeds her…so you have control how much she is eating. You can’t figure this one out on your own?

how about walking her around the park?

The best form of diet is exercise. Start taking her for a walk every day and she’ll start to lose weight. If she continues to gain weight, even with walks, then you may have to reduce the amount of food she gets daily.

buy some quality food, for starters, without animal by-products and fillers. It says right at the beginning of the ingredients if there are animal by-products in the food.

feeding your dog some quality food will do wonders for her health and her weight.

also, train her to eat twice a day. don’t leave a bowl of food all day for her to munch on.

look in the dog food aisle, they have plenty of healthy, weight control foods for dogs. also make sure she gets more exercise, walk her more, take her to the park and let her run around.

Just feed her diet or senior dog food.
You have to transition to it slowly by putting a little in her bowl with her regular food or she will get sick. Add more of the low-cal food and less of her old food slowly until you have completely switched.

First make sure you are not over feeding her; Dogs are good beggars and often hard to resist. Make sure she is getting enough exercise and you can ask the vet what diet dog food they recommend for her.

Stop all treats. Start putting less dogfood in her bowl and make her go outside more often, especially if you have somewhere safe for her to run around a bit or take her for a walk on a leash more often to get her more exercise. Stop feeding her from the table or from your plate. And, last, buy dietary or healthy dog food.

Make sure you are feeding her the recommended amount of kibble for her size; and limit any treats. No people food either. If you can switch her to a higher-quality dog food, that would also be good b/c purina has fillers and other garbage in it. (My dog eats Wellness, she really likes it). I would avoid any diet foods unless you talk to your vet and make sure it is high quality; b/c a lot of times they make it diet by adding more fillers.
Other than that, exercise is key.
Good luck! My dog also has to lose weight and she has been doing well on this plan…still has more to go though!

    Hi,

Before considering to put your dog on a diet, you may want to check this.
    1. Your dog’s lifestyle is a factor. A dog of normal activity level should be fed a ‘maintenance’ diet. A sedentary ‘couch potato’ should be fed about ten percent below maintenance. On the other hand, a highly active dog requires 20 to 40% above maintenance.
    2. Working dogs such as cattle dogs or police dogs may require maintenance plus 40% or, depending on the workload, even up to 70%.
    3. Sick dogs, pregnant or nursing dogs, dogs recovering from surgery, and all puppies require extra nutrition above maintenance.
    4. Show dogs need maintenance plus extra, to provide energy for maintaining high coat quality and countering stress.
    5. Temperature extremes can increase a dog’s energy needs, meaning they require more food.

    Hope it helps. Goodluck!

Decrease the amount of food she gets by about 25%. You can give her a bit of raw, grated carrot or raw green beans as a filler that’s very low in calories, but will fill her up and give her more food to eat. Also, feed her twice a day, not just once.

The other thing you need to do is exercise her. Just like a person, a dog needs to exercise to lose weight. If she’s an old dog or extremely fat, it would be a good idea to take her to the vet first to make sure she’s healthy enough, but she needs to get out walking.

It took her a long time to put on all this extra weight, she needs to lose it in a healthy way, too. Just keep working on it – you’ll increase her life span greatly!!

Start slowly, take her out for walks that are only about 15 minutes long, but walk briskly, 2 or 3 times a day. As she starts getting in better shape, make her walks longer. Then you can start throwing a ball for her in the back yard so she gets in a bit of running

Purina Dog Chow is garbage food. First of all choose a higher quality of food. Many different brands have a “Lite” formula. Also, give her less food and substitute low sodium green beans for part of each meal. The green beans will make her feel full, but with much less calories. Also, you must exercise the dog more. Go for 3 long, brisk walks per day.

    don’t feed it as much.

She might whine and make it ruff on you (dogs are good for guilt trip), but just put less food (a little less each time) until you give her a normal healthy ration.

But have it checked by your vet just in case.

Please read the article below. It will give you great ideas and you can determine the reason for the weight, then how to correct it. Please don’t try to cut the food drastically or over-exercise your dog. That will put too much stress on her. You can even call your vet or any vet and get some advice over the phone but it’s best to make sure that there are no other factors causing it. Most of the time, it is from too many treats, wrong amounts of food, or lack of exercise. Or all of those.

Many commercial foods have so many fillers and sugar in them. Can you afford to switch to a more natural dry food?

Easy. Don’t feed her as much, and talk for a 30 brisk walk/jog every day. Results will be fast and obvious.

Unless your dog has learned how to open the dog chow bag and help herself, you are the one who controls her portions. Makes sure she has lots of water to drink and cut down gradually.

slowly cut down the amount you feed her and exercise her more

You need to cut down her food, stop feeding treats and increase her exercise, take her for longer walks. Playing fetch is a good form of exercise, also swimming. Although if she is seriously overweight you will need to increase the exercise gradually.
lt would be advisable to see the vet first, get her weighed and check what her ideal body weight should be. The vet can advise on the best food to feed to help with weight loss.
Adding bran to her diet will help fill her up but isn’t fattening, it’s also good for the digestive system.

There’s nothing wrong with Purina dog chow, so ignore the people saying to buy better food. There’s a chart on the bag that says if your dog should weigh x-many lbs., feed it x-many cups per day. Split the amount into two feedings, morning and night. And it would be a good thing for Sophie to get more exercise too.

Feed her green beans. If she will not eat the plain green beans, you can get a water based gravy and cook them in that. More water than gravy mix is the best possibly to cut down on her salt intake…
    Good Luck! :)

No, No, No….ignore Rottie Mom! Purina Dog Chow is awful dog food! It would be like feeding your children McDonalds Happy Meals three times a day seven days a week!!! Wow, I cannot imagine how much smelly disgusting goopy dog piles you must clean up! Oooooh, and the farts? You need to switch to a better food, more protien…less empty carbs. Hmmm, sound farmiliar? I would recommend Natural Balance. It comes in many varities…..try Petco or PetSmart. Then, she needs to be fed twice a day, recommended ammounts, and given at least 1 hour of exersice a day! You can both lose weight at the same time(not that I am implying you would need to)!!! Good Luck with you special friend! : )

Peanut, my chihuahua, has a Weight problem too. I quit feeding him dog food, now he gets small portions of ground round beef or chicken mixed with rice, with the veggies added in. he is Healthier than he’s ever been. vet said good job. but you still need to get advise from your vet too. your dog is not the same as mine. May be that you just need to exercise more.
